Grants

Amount: €700

SEAI are offering grants of €700 to everyone upgrading their heating controls along with the gas boiler. To receive this grant, you need to also upgrade your central heating controls and we can easily perform all this for you in a day or two.

Why are SEAI offering Grants?

If your gas boiler is more than 4 years old, chances are, it's about 65% fuel efficient, no matter what brand name or how aged it may look. Before July 2008, the Building Regulations did not specify how efficient the boiler had to be. Therefore, Ireland has way too many inefficient boilers.

Changes in the building regulations in July 2008 have specified minimum seasonal net efficiencies of 86% for all domestic boilers. Our gas boilers far surpass this with seasonal net efficiencies of up to 91.2%.

F.A.Q

  • Why should I upgrade my current boiler?
    1. Reliability. Because boilers have moving parts, electronics and metal that can corrode, boilers have a natural lifespan and eventually need to be replaced in order to keep up efficiency and reliability. 2. Controlling costs. Heating your home is one of the largest cost of living in a house. Condensing boilers consume less fuel (gas/oil) but still give the same heat output you want. By upgrading to a good, new condensing boiler, your gas bills will be 20% to 30% reduced. 3. The environmental impact.
  • Where is a condensing boiler suitable?
99% of houses are suitable for condensing boilers without much disruption. Because the boilers produce condensation, this needs to be sent to a drain somewhere, which is the main logistical difference between them and traditional boilers.
  • What size gas boiler do I need for my home?
Most modern homes in Ireland use system gas boilers with a hot water press. The power output of system gas boilers varies, and the suitable size depends on factors such as the property size. How many bedrooms you have is usually a good indicator of what size boiler you need.
  • How long does it take to replace my gas boiler?
We can usually replace your gas boiler in one day, however each setup and installation is slightly different so in some cases we may need 2 days - but this is rare.

Combi boilers

What are Combi boilers

Combi gas boilers are an ideal option for compact properties with minimal hot water requirements. They offer instantaneous hot water, enhancing your home comfort and boosting overall efficiency.

However, while they can adequately supply hot water for small homes, combi boilers may not be the best choice if you have multiple bathrooms or showers as combi boilers are limited in the amount of hot water they can produce.

Advantages and disadvantages for combi boilers

Combi boilers, also known as combination boilers, are becoming increasingly popular in Ireland due to their capacity to supply instant hot water without requiring a separate hot water tank. The term “combi” refers to their dual functionality - they can provide both heating and hot water as required. Let’s delve into the advantages and disadvantages of combi boilers to assist you in determining if they’re the suitable option for your home.

Advantages of Combi Boilers:

  1. High Efficiency: Approximately 55% of your annual energy costs are attributed to heating your home. Condensing combi boilers boast impressive efficiency ratings of 90-94%. This means you’ll enjoy a warmer home while using less energy, resulting in lower bills.

  2. Compact Design: Combi boilers are significantly more compact than traditional systems that require a hot water cylinder. Their smaller size makes them suitable for installation in lofts, utility rooms, or even kitchen cupboards. Some high-output combi models can even incorporate a tank to provide very high hot water flow rates for homes with greater hot water demands.

  3. Instant Hot Water: With a combi boiler, you’ll have hot water available instantly whenever you need it. Unlike conventional systems that store hot water in an insulated tank, combi boilers heat water on the spot, ensuring you never run out of hot water.

  4. Easy Installation: For new build properties, combi boiler systems are easier and quicker to install compared to conventional boilers because they have fewer external components. The absence of a water tank not only speeds up the installation process but can also reduce installation costs.

Drawbacks of Combi Boilers:
  1. Dependent on Adequate Mains Pressure: Combi boilers rely on good mains water pressure. If your mains supply has poor pressure, your taps and showers may not function optimally. It’s advisable to check your mains pressure or discuss booster pump options with your installer.

  2. No Immersion Heater: Unlike conventional boiler systems, combi boilers do not include an immersion heater. If your combi boiler malfunctions, you won’t have a backup heating or hot water system until it’s repaired.

  3. Incompatibility with Power Showers: Power showers, which utilize separate pumps for strong water pressure, are not compatible with combi boilers. The mains water pressure of combi boilers doesn’t support power showers.

  4. Limited Hot Water Supply: Combi boilers can provide only a certain amount of hot water at a time. In larger homes with multiple bathrooms, running more than one hot tap simultaneously can lead to reduced pressure or cold water. Some combi boiler systems offer solutions, such as internal tanks, to address this issue.

Note to Customers

Older gas installations could not be at current standards for Gas Installation IS 813 and might need to be upgraded. Examples of substandard gas installations are:

  • Missing earth wire in 10square from gas line and hot press where the hot water cylinder is normally located.

  • If there are more gas appliances in your home another substandard installation could be the lack of isolating gas valve for the gas cooker or hob, or the cooker hose could be older than permissible and needed to be upgraded.

  • Gas line supplying the boiler could be undersized. If it's only 1/2 inch which will cause not enough gas pressure to the burner, the burners in new boilers require more pressure than older one. Therefore, by manufacturer instructions and Gas Standards Installation IS 813 latest edition 2017 a gas boiler can not be commissioned if the gas pressure to the burner is less than 19mbars, regulator at meter regulates the pressure to 20mbars where by friction on the supply pipe normally will be a loss of 1mbar which is acceptable, this can only be discovered when the boiler is on in full load, judging only by looking at the existing size of the supply pipe where possible and buried, in some cases can not even be seen only a small amount of the pipe can not guarantee will be achieved the desired and recommended gas pressure to the burner and in this case the boiler can not be commissioned.
